Rhaea Larson is a multidisciplinary artist based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada
In her work, she explores the human experience and the feelings around nostalgia experienced when we remember. In a large portion of her work, she focuses on the feminine to explore how her place in the world, as a woman, has evolved as she has aged.
To begin her investigation, in her paintings, she uses a series of found and personal images, which she then layers to create a dream-like composition with a vague underlying narrative. She paints in a contemporary figurative style and pulls and pushes certain aspects backwards and forwards by layering paint to achieve an ethereal quality.
She commonly uses animal heads and figures in place of human forms as animals evoke stronger associations with certain behaviours and emotions. These motifs strengthen the overlying absurdity, underlying narrative and the dreamlike feeling we all experience when we tap into certain memories from our past.
